Ever since Showtime‘s Yellowjackets premiered last fall, audiences have been speculating about which teen soccer stars live, which die, and who gets eaten. People want to know if we’ll meet other surviving Yellowjackets in the present day, if Jackie (Ella Purnell) secretly manages to survive, and whether or not Shauna’s baby will be offered up for a group dinner. The Yellowjackets Season 1 finale answered some of those burning questions, from Jackie’s fate to the future of weird rich girl Lottie (Courtney Eaton). However what’s most exciting about the Yellowjackets Season 1 finale is how it sets up even more insane drama in Season 2.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets follows an elite high school soccer team that finds itself stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash in 1996. We know that at some point the surviving girls descend into cannibalism and that four of the survivors — Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), Taissa (Tawny Cypress), Natalie (Juliette Lewis), and Misty (Christina Ricci) — are haunted by their experience in the present day. Over the course of Yellowjackets Season 1, fans have been served murder mysteries, supernatural horror, and the burning question: when do these girls start eating each other?!? The Yellowjackets Season 1 finale doesn’t feature any cannibalism, but we do see a main character die and learn who killed another one of the crash’s survivors.
Still trying to make sense of the Yellowjackets Season 1 finale? Curious where Yellowjackets Season 2 will go? Wondering if we’ll see an adult Lottie cast for Season 2? Disappointed the girls didn’t vote to kill and eat Jackie? Nervous about the fate of teen Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) baby?!? Decider spoke at length with Yellowjackets EP Jonathan Lisco, who co-showruns the series alongside Lyle and Nickerson, for answers. Lisco explained the thought behind many of the Yellowjackets Season 1 finale’s biggest twists and teased the many debates raging in the writers’ room for Yellowjackets Season 2…
Yellowjackets Season 1 Ending Explained: Is Lottie Officially the Antler Queen?
In the final moments of Yellowjackets Season 1, we watch as the adult Natalie is kidnapped by a group of cult members wearing necklaces emblazoned with the creepy symbol from the woods. A panicked voicemail informs Natalie — too late — that the person who seemingly killed Travis and emptied his bank account is none other than Lottie Matthews. The last shot of the season set in the past reveals a teen Lottie offering a bear heart to nature with Van (Liv Hewson) and Misty (Sammy Hanratty) praying behind her.
So Lottie is the Antler Queen, huh? It’s confirmed! Yes, and no.
Yellowjackets showrunner Jonathan Lisco did confirm to Decider that Lottie is running a cult in the 2021 storyline and that she was chosen to be Season 2’s “big bad” fairly early on during the production of Season 1.
“We were certainly thinking about all the pieces and who could be ‘the Antler Queen’ and who could be in charge of that cult early on, but we were also doing this thing that we do in TV which is a feedback loop. We were seeing where the chemistry was with all these characters,” Lisco said. “But Lottie, of course, was a candidate from the very beginning, largely because — don’t forget — she’s suffering from mental illness, which we wanted to depict in a way that felt truthful. And ask the question of whether or not her demons were living inside her or she was tapping into a darkness outside of her.”
“If you watch carefully, she’s really the first person to become transfixed by the symbol and that symbol starts to sort of live inside her. And as the season progresses, I hope you’ll feel, very organically, that she’s finding her strength, her power, and her intuition,” Lisco said. “And as we saw Courtney’s performance, which was nuanced and wonderful and quietly earnest, we started to feel like, ‘Oh, this is interesting.’ And that could lead to a really big story in Season 2 where that cult, in the present day, was never really dead. We were seeing the germination of it in Season 1, but 25 years later, we’ll see not the culmination of it, but the ongoing course of it.”
While Lisco would confirm that Lottie is running a cult in the present day, he was still reluctant to officially reveal that Lottie is the person wearing the Antler mantle in the show’s opening sequence.
“I’m not necessarily committing to the fact that the Antler Queen ultimately is Lottie. Those two things may diverge. But the idea of someone being very involved in the cult — or transfixed by the cult in the present day — and who that Antler Queen is, that may be a surprise to the audience ultimately.”
Who Will Play Adult Lottie in Yellowjackets Season 2? Will Other Adult Yellowjackets Appear in Season 2?
If there’s one thing Yellowjackets fans love more than the show itself, it’s speculating on which ’90s acting icons might pop up in the present day storyline as adult versions of the Yellowjackets. Lisco revealed that the production team has already discussed “candidates” to play an adult Lottie. “I’d be lying to you if I said that wasn’t something that we’re considering,” Lisco said.
When Decider asked if they were working to cast an actress who, like Courtney Eaton, is of partial Chinese and Maori descent, Lisco said, “We certainly have to look at the best actor, but obviously this idea of wanting to maintain her ethnic background and be true to it is a huge looming issue that we want to stay truthful to. It’s just a matter of do you have a deep enough pool of those kinds of actors who can pull off something compelling in the 2021 storyline? I’d like to think the answer is yes, but before we do a deep dive on that, it’s hard to say.”
So adult Lottie is going to join Yellowjackets Season 2, but will we meet any more survivors of that hellish crash?
“I think it’s very unlikely that we’ve met all the survivors of the crash,” Lisco said. “Most people think, ‘Oh, we’re definitely going to meet more of these characters.’ And there are many left. There is Akilah (Keeyah King). There is Mari (Alexa Barajas). There are many Yellowjackets who only have a line or two, here and there. And again, as we continue to watch that feedback loop, to see who we could use in a very compelling and riveting way in the future, I think we’re going to go there.”
Did Jackie Die in the Yellowjackets Season 1 Finale? Do They Eat Jackie in the Yellowjackets Season 1 Finale?
Sorry everyone who thought Jackie lived and was going to appear in the 2021 timeline! Jackie is definitely dead. After getting into a fight with Shauna, Jackie stubbornly decides to sleep outdoors, even though she can’t light a fire without help. An upset Shauna refuses to reach out to her friend, leaving her outside overnight. The problem is a harsh blizzard coated the woods during the night, killing Jackie of exposure in the process.
Jackie is indeed dead. She’s gone. And — worse for some fans — Lisco confirmed to Decider that they do not eat Jackie.
“I think a lot of the audience said, ‘I know what’s going to happen. They’re going to eat Jackie! I’m sure that’s what’s going to happen.’ And look, I wouldn’t say this is a slow burn. I would hope that you and the audience are feeling that we are moving very fast,” Lisco said. “But at the same time, getting to cannibalism is not going to happen tomorrow. And I think that’s one of the things that’s so tasty and delicious about the show. You’re sort of living with these characters. Getting to know them, getting to love them, so that when they do revert to that — because you were already basically told that’s where they’re going — you’ll literally identify with their choices in that given moment. Hopefully, and see yourself in that space.”
Lisco added that even though Jackie is dead, that doesn’t mean Ella Purnell is gone from the show for good. The same goes for fan favorite Laura Lee (Jane Widdop), who perished in a plane explosion in Episode 8.
“I think there is absolutely a world in which Jackie reappears. And Laura Lee, too,” Lisco said. “As you saw we even use Laura Lee in that episode even though she exploded in the plane. And to me, when she’s shown in soft focus, vaseline on the lens, and you realize that this is actually Shauna’s dream from which she wakes to find Jackie dead — I mean that is a beautiful moment. At least, I found. I’ve seen it 57 times. I’ve worked on every frame of the film and it still moves me. And when Shauna runs out and screams out in pain over Jackie’s body that’s frozen, it’s really compelling.”
Who is the Hunter In the Yellowjackets Season 1 Finale?
Speaking of Shauna’s dream… As Jackie realizes the gravity of her situation, she is haunted by what appears to be the same hunter the girls found dead in the cabin earlier in the season. The character, simply called “Hunter” in the episode’s end credits is played by actor William Charles Vaughn. Decider asked Jonathan Lisco if the Hunter was a true supernatural figure haunting the girls in the cabin and if we’d learn more about him in Season 2.
“I love the creativity of our fans,” Lisco said, “because many of them think, ‘Well, why would he have died in that chair, unless he was unable to leave the cabin? What dark force was keeping him in the cabin?’ But the dark force could equally just have been absolute paralyzing fear.”
Lisco added: “I would like to submit [the Hunter] may actually be traumatized in the course of Season 2 because in our minds’ eye, we have a whole backstory. An entire narrative about that French-Canadian hunter, let’s call him for the moment, and his family and why he used to go up to the cabin and what he used to do with his children, almost in a Shining-esque way. Perhaps. And how things went for him and why the energy now in the cabin is such that it’s affecting the girls in this way.”
Lisco teased, “I could totally see going in that direction in Season 2.”
Was Adam Secretly Javi? Is There Still a Dark Mystery Surrounding Adam? Or Was Adam Just a Dude?
The Yellowjackets Season 1 finale also dealt with the fallout of Shauna’s impulsive decision to murder her lover, Adam (Peter Gadiot). Nat, Taissa, and Misty help Shauna dispose of the body, but by episode’s end, Adam has been declared missing. Will Adam’s murder haunt Yellowjackets Season 2? What was Adam’s deal? Did he have a nefarious reason for lying to Shauna or was he simply a dude who loved her?
“I think either is possible. I like both version. And honestly we have to get into the writers room on Season 2 to really suss this out but I like the idea that there’s more to unravel about him,” Lisco said. “I equally like the idea that the story we’re actually telling is about post traumatic stress syndrome for Shauna.”
“First, and I just want to give you some insight into this, we were trying to be literally logical in how the past affected her actions in the present when she was holding the knife. Then we really did some research about PTSD and we realized that’s not how it works. It’s not a 1:1 mapping of your trauma in the past and what you do in the present. It’s an overflowing culmination of all these images that you can’t control on a logical level that flood into your right brain and make you do things that trigger you. And so we put all those things in,” Lisco said.
Because of that research, Lisco added it’s unlikely that Adam was an adult version of Travis’s little brother Javi, a fan favorite theory online.
“If he were Javi from the woods, in a way that’s a good idea,” Lisco said. “That says that her actions were reasonable and that if she knew it was Javi, oh, now she’s truly threatened. I think the story that we wanted to tell, that was even more interesting, to us is that she’s triggered and that this man might have just been in love with her. Period. Full stop. And she just killed something that could have been really beautiful in her life potentially.”
Lisco said Adam’s backstory is one of many threads that the writers’ room is excited to debate for Season 2 and they’ll follow whatever storyline they think is the most compelling.
Will They Eat Shauna’s Baby in Yellowjackets Season 2?
One of the big questions dogging Yellowjackets right now is what happens to Shauna’s still unborn baby in the wilderness. Shauna tried to hide her pregnancy early on in the season, probably hoping for rescue before she started showing, but by the end of Yellowjackets Season 1, the cat’s out of the bag. Shauna is pregnant with Jackie’s boyfriend Jeff’s baby. So what happens to the kid? Shauna and Jeff (Warren Kole) might be married in the current day, but their teen daughter Callie (Sarah Desjardens) is way too young to be the baby born in the woods.
So what does Lisco have to say about the prevailing online theory? That the girls will eat Shauna’s baby to survive?
“We have about ten different ideas about what happens to the baby,” Lisco said. “I think none of us adore the idea of eating the baby, although you never know what’s going to happen once you get into the crucible of the writer’s room. In a way, eating the baby seems a little bit easy.”
“Also, not to be crass, but the baby is a mere morsel in terms of sustenance. So I’m not sure that’s like a blue ribbon strategy to survival in the woods,” he said. “I think, again, it all has to do with the way it impacts our characters emotionally and I think when we get into Season 2, we’ll be asking, ‘Would that be the most emotional story to tell?’ Or would there be something else that’s more interesting, arguably, and more emotional to deal with the baby?”
Another question about the baby that interests Lisco? Does Jeff know about about said child and how does he feel about its eventual fate?
Is Jeff a Good Guy or a Bad Guy on Yellowjackets?
One of the sweeter swerves in Yellowjackets Season 1 was the revelation that Jeff wasn’t cheating on Shauna, but was involved with loan sharks. (“There’s no book club?!?”) While Lisco admitted that “there are definitely secrets that we don’t know about Jeff,” he confirmed that overall Jeff is a good egg.
“We figured out that he was a good dude early in the season and we got lucky in casting Warren because he brings that good ‘dudedness’ to the table very naturally,” Lisco said, sharing he was disheartened to learn fans thought Jeff was a “dope.”
“I kept thinking, ‘No, guys, we began the season trying to arc out their relationship. We deliberately started this way because we want to tell the story of a marriage and a marriage that is worth maintaining, for both of them,'” Lisco said. “For me, the moment where he is willing to take the fall for her? I hope shows the audience that he’s actually got a very beautiful heart. And she says, ‘I can’t believe you read all these journals and you still…’ ‘Of course I love you, Shauna.’ I mean, that really tells me that man didn’t just pivot away from Jackie as sloppy seconds, so-to-speak. He actually loves this woman. And he was smart enough to see in her a beautiful soul, a great soulmate.”
So Jeff has Shauna’s back heading into Yellowjackets Season 2, but what about “friends” Misty and Taissa?
Who Will Be Team Lottie In Yellowjackets Season 2? Looking at Misty and Taissa’s Loyalties
The Yellowjackets Season 1 finale puts the loyalties of two Yellowjackets in doubt. Sure we’ve seen Misty take cocaine to save Natalie from herself, but who will Misty choose when she learns Lottie has kidnapped Nat? While Misty’s loyalty to Nat seems strong, the final shot of the season reveals that teen Misty was one of Lottie’s original acolytes in the woods.
“I actually think that Misty is a free agent,” Lisco said. “I think everything we’ve seen about Misty so far shows that she has deeply seeded loyalties — until she doesn’t. She’s very, very focused on principles of friendship, but as we see, she’s also a bit of a sociopath who can pivot very fast.”
“Which side Misty is on? I would say initially probably along with Lottie because she’s there, very overwhelmed by the experience. But 25 years later? The question of how she’s processed that I think will be really interesting to explore in Season 2 and whether or not her processing of that [experience] and her pragmatism collide,” Lisco said.
In the case of Taissa, the situation is a little more complicated. The Taissa we know is pragmatic to a fault, but she’s a wholly different person when she’s sleepwalking. In the Yellowjackets Season 1 finale, Taissa’s wife discovers a ghoulish altar just as Taissa wins her New Jersey State Senate race. Lisco says that the moment Taissa wins, you can see on actor Tawny Cypress’s face that she knows the sacrifices she made to Lottie’s cult secured her victory.
“A part of her is very aware that that altar exists. Her alter ego knows it keenly. She is repressing the knowledge of it, but she definitely knows about it,” Lisco said. “I think there’s a ton to unpack for her moving forward in Season 2. Was it worth it? What happens with Simone? Will she get her son back? Once she actually consciously accepts that fact that she’s essentially a bifurcated personality who does stuff in her sleep that she can’t control, what steps will she take in order to quell that demon?”
Will There Be Cannibalism in Yellowjackets Season 2?
Even though Lisco has made it clear the girls’ descent into the cannibalistic society we saw teased in the show’s cold open won’t happen overnight, when we asked about overall themes for Yellowjackets Season 2, he addressed cannibalism straight on.
“I would like to think that the audience is starting to think, ‘Oh, cannibalism. They must have eaten each other because of scarcity.’ But I actually think one thing to explore is not just scarcity, but also social hierarchy, fear, relationships, not just relationships, but the interesting, specific bonds between women that either fray or bind them together for life,” Lisco said.
“We’re hoping to explore if it’s not just [because of] scarcity that they’re eating each other, why would they be doing that? Would it have to do with the creation of a new micro-society? Does it have to do with superstition keeping them alive in the woods? Because now that all the conventions have fallen away, there’s this newfound freedom to create their own reality,” he added. “Perhaps creating their own reality entails keeping this fear of the supernatural, this darkness, at bay. And so they may create rules in order to keep themselves mentally and psychologically secure. Do we hate them for that? Do we admire them for that? Do we identify with them for that? I think those are some of the questions we’re going to ask over the course of Season 2.”

When Decider asked if the heart necklace swapped between Shauna and Jackie (and seen on the corpse the girls eat in that cold open) will be a totem of this new community, Lisco said, “I think it has to. Because the audience is tracking that necklace. It’s already been given back and forth a couple of times. So whoever winds up with that necklace, it’s probably not going to be a great talisman, let’s put it that way, to be wearing the necklace.”

Finally Lisco confirmed that one of the big questions dogging Yellowjackets fans — whether or not there is a supernatural element at play or if all the carnage is a product of the survivors’ trauma — will be explored in Season 2.
“We’re going to ask this question in Season 2 about the supernatural in general because some people want answers: Is there a monster in the woods?” Lisco said. “But like what is the supernatural anyway except a weird, other energy that we feel? We’ve all been walking at night and felt some energy. Is that coming from outside of us? Is there actually a boogeyman in the woods? Or is it coming from our mental stressors? Is it coming from our psychology? Is it coming from within us? And now we have this collective group under such duress, where is the darkness coming from? Outside of them or inside of them? And either way, how do they keep it at bay? And I think that’s going to be a really interesting thing to explore in Season 2.”
